Invisible Boundaries
When initially analysing the site I found it interesting how the area is primarily used for vehicles. It's quite interesting to see how they interact, guided by road markings, although sometimes ignored for instance I noticed bikes often ignor them.
Exhibition - Shadow Catchers
I found this exhibition really interesting; different techniques for recording an environment without a camera. All the artists captured shadows directly onto photographic paper, eliminating the need for a camera.
Susan Derges makes photograms of water, her images reveal 'the hidden forces of nature' capturing the pattern of the sound waves within the water. I found the patterns created fascinating as they were photographs of conditions that almost exist in another world being hard to identify with the human eye.
Pen and Ink site drawing, I was thinking about the ephemeral conditions of the site. An oil spill/ puddle could create patterns that could potentially become a form.

Forgotten Presence
Photos taken with a slow shutter speed to indicate the presence if a ghost, I began to think about how the space used to be occupied and the idea of the site almost becoming inhabited by ancient relics as we move into the future.
Mapping
I began my research by mapping the local area, using the figure and ground technique to identify possible locations for my project.
I like this as a graphic image but didn't find it all that useful, so I made a more detailed coded map showing land use. Although this image may be hard to understand I don't want to put a key on it. A figure and ground map can be viewed purely as a graphic and I want this map to maintain that same quality.
However this map only helps to reiterate my first impression that the surrounding area is hostile to the pedestrian.
Project - Space of Waste
Still thinking about sustainability I went to find a site, and came across an old disused petrol station in Vauxhall, perfect.
Project - Shelter
I had a group project which was to build a shelter for emergency aid from waste materials. We spent a long time trying to think of something which was a structural element and waste material in London, that we could combine with speedo to form a shelter.
This structure was built by Kengo Kuma, by modifying umbrellas. We liked this idea as it provided a form and also had the possibility to be a number of sizes depending on the amount of umbrellas used - making it suitable for different sized families or communities. So now we just needed to find lots of unwanted umbrellas - we managed from a variety of lost property offices across London; TFL, museums, and numerous theatres.
These are some of the lost property tags - I like the idea that each umbrella has a story.
