I had a group project which was to build a shelter for emergency aid from waste materials. We spent a long time trying to think of something which was a structural element and waste material in London, that we could combine with speedo to form a shelter.
This structure was built by Kengo Kuma, by modifying umbrellas. We liked this idea as it provided a form and also had the possibility to be a number of sizes depending on the amount of umbrellas used - making it suitable for different sized families or communities. So now we just needed to find lots of unwanted umbrellas - we managed from a variety of lost property offices across London; TFL, museums, and numerous theatres.
These are some of the lost property tags - I like the idea that each umbrella has a story.
